Knot's premise is simple: two generic boxes meet a complex "delineated figure," an intricate three-dimensional line unfolding in space with constantly varying thickness and direction. The project begins as the design of unexpected—and sometimes uncomfortable—interactions between these seemingly incompatible forms. The delineated figure inflects the boxes creating a connecting tissue blending the three forms into a kind of architectural knot. The new form is developed into a building scheme for a theater, wherein the central tangle of geometry becomes a highly sculptural atrium around which the rest of the program is organized.
Initial studies to determine the spatial language of the proposed intervention
Parti diagrams were used to determine the scale and configuration of the proposed intervention with respect to interior and exterior spatial relationships.
