Eroded Cubes is a proposal for a mixed-use building located at a major intersection in Hollywood, CA. The proposal builds on a basic diagram of three cubic masses corresponding to the main programmatic blocks, which meet in unconventional and sometimes uncomfortable ways. Rather than trying to fully resolve the forms through designing seamless joinery, the project sets out to explore alternative ways to negotiate transitions between the masses through a hyper-articulation of the edges. The resulting plays of flat and thicker surfaces, opacity and transparency, and graphic patterns vs untreated monolithic volumes provide the basis for the distribution of functions in the interior of the scheme.
Initial studies to determine the spatial language of the proposed intervention
Parti diagrams were used to determine the scale and configuration of the proposed intervention with respect to interior and exterior spatial relationships.
